Lucky Stiff is a stage musical written like a movie. It jumps from location to location quickly. In the opening number alone our hero goes from shoe store to subway to boarding house to lawyers office all in one song. So all the settings had to be minimalist and perform double duty. The bed became a stage and a garden wall, The shoe counter doubled as a taylor shop. We created multiple set pieces that defined locations and used the actors to move them from scene to scene. Lighting designer Kitty Getlik used the lights to set the scene and shift focus on stage as cast members moved from scene to scene and from one character to another.
We also created a series of black light puppets that were used in a dream sequence. These floated above the hero's bed and acted out his nightmare.
